Jim Sommerfeldt is the Old Man of the Voyager School, having taught here longer than any other
teacher in its history. He loves hockey, the Red Wings, and plays goalie in a recreational league.
He is also a well recognized performer, director and playwright in West Michigan. He writes
music and plays drum.
Celia is Jim's wife of 27 years and counting. They have four grown children, Erich and Christopher,
and twins Monica and Joanna who arrived in the Sommerfeldt home via Vietnam.
Jim's latest project is directing his own play, "Crusade," for the Grand Rapids Civic Theater, and
he will also be performing at Tibbet's Opera House Summer stock theater as the voice of "Audrey
II". With Co-author Annette Robidoux, Jim has written a picture book entitled, "Thickened Flied
Lice" and he'd be glad to sell anyone a copy.

Celia Sommerfeldt has been a teacher since 1979. She has taught in public, private and Catholic
schools. She was first involved in progressive education at a private school called Climbing Tree
in Grand Rapids. She was a teacher there for six years. Her husband, Jim, got his job in the Open
Classroom in Grand Haven and Celia soon followed him. She began teaching at Ferry School in the
Spring of 1995 as a long term substitute. The following fall she had her own classroom at Ferry
as a sixth grade teacher. The next year Celia taught a 3/4 combination classroom. In the fall of
1997 she began team teaching in the Voyager Program with her husband, Jim.
